Journeys to school and school transport

A school transport benefit may be granted to Tampere residents who are pupils in City of Tampere schools, either in preschool or in grades 1 to 9, for whom the school transport prerequisites are met.

Summary of prerequisites for school transport to a pre-primary education or primary school close to the pupil’s home: 

• Journey of more than 3 km (preschool, grades 1-2)
• Journey of more than 4 km (grades 3-4, along with Kämmenniemi school and Olkahinen school Sorila schoolhouse pupils grades 5-6)
• Journey of more than 5 km (grades 5-9)
• Based on the difficulty, arduousness, or dangerousness of the journey (Requires evidence, e.g. a statement from the student welfare services)
• Health reasons (statement from the student welfare services or a medical certificate)

The Education and Culture Committee has decided on these grounds on October 29, 2020.

The guardian must file their application for the school transport benefit through Wilma. 

1. Log into Wilma.
2. Select the Applications and decisions tab.
3. Click on New application.
4. Select application
   • Hakemus joukkoliikenteen Nysse-koululippuun = Application for Nysse school transport ticket (if only applying for a bus ticket for the pupil)  
   • Hakemus koulukuljetukseen = Application for school transport (in other cases) 

If you apply for a transport benefit in the middle of the school year, please contact the school secretary of the pupil’s school as soon as you have submitted the application.

The application period for the school transport benefit for the next school year is in March-April. There is no need to contact the school about such applications. A more specific application period will be communicated to the guardians by Wilma message and this website when the application period is near.

The guardian or the pupil must load a Nysse school transport ticket they have been granted onto their personal travel card (Other benefits). The school transport tickets for the next school year are eligible for loading starting on July 1.

When loading a ticket at the customer service point, identification must be provided. 

If a pupil does not yet have a personal travel card, they must obtain one themself. The applicant is liable for any fees incurred in acquiring a travel card. The same card may also be used for other journeys, as well as services such as swimming pool fees, if the user adds to the cash balance of the card.

Basic information about the Nysse school transport ticket

• One or two school journeys per school day will be loaded onto the card as per the decision of the principal.

• The card will be loaded for the entire school year at once.

• The school ticket is available on school days between 6.30 am and 5 pm.

• If a travel card is lost, notify the Tampere transit customer service immediately.

• If the pupil moves, changes schools, or loses their eligibility to the school transport benefit for some other reason, they must visit the customer service point without delay to have the school transport ticket removed from their travel card.
