Promoting wellbeing in Tampere

Wellbeing is a personal experience. The City of Tampere regularly monitors the state of its residents’ wellbeing through various indicators and works determinedly to improve overall wellbeing and reduce disparities. The wellbeing objectives for Tampere residents are set out in a wellbeing plan, which is drawn up for each council term.

Promoting wellbeing and health is a statutory duty of the municipality. Its aim is to enhance residents’ wellbeing, health and functional capacity, prevent illnesses, and strengthen participation and community spirit. The promotion of wellbeing and health is connected to all city activities. Many city services support and advance residents’ wellbeing, such as cultural provision, the maintenance of streets and sports facilities, employment services, as well as early childhood education and schooling.

A comprehensive wellbeing report and plan concerning Tampere residents is prepared for each council term, that is, every four years.

The wellbeing report brings together information from various sources about the health and wellbeing of Tampere residents, as well as related factors and changes in recent years. Data is obtained from, among other things, different statistics, studies and surveys, in which residents themselves can describe their wellbeing.

The wellbeing plan, in turn, sets out the objectives and measures for promoting and maintaining residents’ wellbeing in the coming years. The plan examines the wellbeing of Tampere residents through eight areas: health and lifestyles, growth and learning, participation and influence, social relationships, living environment and nature, safety, home and livelihood, as well as hobbies and work.
