Renovation of Puutarhakatu

Puutarhakatu will be renovated between the parks Vanhankirkonpuisto and Hämeenpuisto. The renovation started in March 2025 and continues until 2026. The renovation is being carried out because the water and sewer pipes have reached the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. District cooling pipes will also be built on the street.

After the renovation, the street will have a wider two-way cycle track on the northern edge, pavements on both sides and a one-way carriageway for motor vehicles. The renovation will improve walking and cycling conditions and road safety, and make the street a more pleasant environment. The management of stormwater, i.e. rainwater and meltwater, will also be improved.

Construction site in March

The infrastructure work crew has moved from Aleksis Kiven katu to Hämeenpuisto to dig a connection point for a water main. At the intersection in Hämeenpuisto, one northbound lane has been closed to traffic, while the other lane remains open. Work is also underway on Aleksis Kiven katu, though this is being carried out by Tampereen Energia on the district cooling system.

Kuninkaankatu has been converted into a pedestrian street. Please follow traffic signs when driving in the vicinity of the area.

Puutarhakatu is open to vehicular traffic along its entire length, from Aleksis Kiven katu to Hämeenpuisto, with one-way traffic from east to west.  A combined pedestrian and bicycle path is in place on the south side of Puutarhakatu during construction, and the north side is currently a sidewalk only.

The accessible parking spaces on Kuninkaankatu have been moved to the west side of the intersection of Kuninkaankatu and Puutarhakatu, along Puutarhakatu.

If necessary, please contact the construction site by e-mail [email protected].

The aim is to renovate as much as possible in one go, in cooperation between the different actors, so as to cause as little inconvenience as possible and in as short a time as possible.

The renovation of the City Hall and the construction of a new building at the corner of Puutarhakatu and Aleksis Kiven katu are also underway. City Hall and its new building will be completed in spring 2026.

Project actors

The City of Tampere is the main developer of the Puutarhakatu project. Tampere Water, Tampereen Energia Oy, Tampereen Energia Sähköverkko Oy and telecom operators are also involved. Tampereen Infra Oy is the main contractor of the project.  Puutarhakatu will be renewed in cooperation between the parties involved.

The renovation of Puutarhakatu will allow properties bordering the street to improve the accessibility of entrances, for example by removing low thresholds and stairs.
